St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club is a prestigious tennis club located in Weybridge, Surrey. The Club has been in existence since 1913 and has a rich history of providing top-class tennis facilities to its members. One of the key features of the club is its range of court surfaces, which cater to the needs of players of all levels. Here, we will take a closer look at the different court surfaces at one of the most successful tennis clubs in the UK:
Grass Courts
Grass courts are the most traditional surface for tennis and are commonly associated with Wimbledon, the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club has 13 grass courts, which are open for play during the summer months. The grass courts at St George’s Hill are very well-maintained and provide a fast, low-bouncing surface, which rewards players with good serve and volley skills.
Artificial Grass Courts
The Club also has two artificial grass courts, which provide a similar playing experience to natural grass courts. The advantage of artificial grass courts is that they can be played on throughout the year, regardless of the weather conditions. The artificial grass surface provides a consistent bounce, making it a popular choice for players who prefer a medium-paced game.
Clay Courts
Clay courts are made of crushed brick or shale and are the preferred surface for many professional players, particularly those from Europe and South America. St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club has three Tru Clay courts. The clay surface is slower than grass and provides a high bounce, making it ideal for players who rely on their baseline game. In addition, there are a further 10 artificial clay tennis courts which provide the perfect surface for players looking for softness underfoot, a cooler surface under a hot sun and conversely, a safe surface in wet weather.
Acrylic Courts
Porous Acrylic courts are the most common type of hard court surface and are made of a mixture of materials including acrylic resins, rubber and silica. The Club has four porous acrylic courts, which are open for play throughout the year. The acrylic surface provides a medium-fast pace and a consistent bounce, making it suitable for players of all levels.
Indoor Courts
For those that prefer the comfort of playing inside and the excitement of a much faster game, the Club has two indoor Green Set GrandPrix Acrylic with a sprung timber sub frame. These courts are climate-controlled, making it the perfect space to play whatever the weather. Back in 2020 these courts played host to the UK Pro Series and Classic Tournament with Emma Raducanu and Liam Broady being crowned the first ever UK Pro Classic champions.
Paul Bishop, Head Groundsman at St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club commented: “It has been a pleasure keeping all the tennis courts in tip-top condition over the past 20 years and, as always, look forward to opening the grass courts this year for all our members to enjoy.”
With its rich tennis heritage, St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club offers a wide range of court surfaces to cater to the needs of its members. Whether you prefer traditional grass courts, the consistent bounce of artificial grass courts, the slow pace of clay courts or the medium-fast pace of acrylic courts, there is something for everyone at the Club.
