What it’s like to be a member
Here’s a little insight into what it’s like being a member of St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club.
The friendly welcome
When Gill Thompson moved from London to Cobham, she wanted a place for the family to play tennis and be active together.
Gill has been a member of St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club for 13 years now. With so many activities on offer, Gill is at the Club 3 to 4 times a week with her husband and teenage kids playing sport and having fun.
The excellent tennis facilities, professional coaching and competitive leagues are popular with the Thompsons, but it’s the social events that keep them busy too. Gill’s kids have enjoyed the club from an early age, from playing in the creche to learning tennis and now regularly meet up with friends at the weekend.
From having dinner with the family, meeting friends for drinks or joining quiz evenings, they always enjoy the friendly welcome that’s on offer at the Club.
World-class sport on the doorstep
St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club has something for the whole Flint Family.
The family joined the Club about 5 years ago to develop the children’s talent for squash and give them a life-long love of the game.
While her sons are having lessons with the Head Coach, Danny Lee, Therese Flint makes the most of the social spaces at the Club. She grabs a coffee on the terrace, meets friends for lunch and sometimes takes advantage of the wide range of treatments at the spa.
Squash is a big focus throughout the year. The boys moved from playing friendly tournaments to playing all over the country & becoming highly ranked in England. When the world-class squash events take place in the all-glass exhibition court, the whole family are always there to watch the action.
Everyone loves a Wednesday evening
Wednesday evenings are special for Terry Watkins.
He has been a member of St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club since 1987 and is the heartbeat of Wednesday Evening Tennis Stars, affectionately known as the WETS.
Every Wednesday from 6 to 7.30pm the WETS get together for a friendly round of mixed doubles. Then it’s off in our whites for a social drink in the Club Room or if warm enough on the Terrace, with dinner afterwards. It’s part of what makes Wednesdays so special.
The WETS also meet and play on the first Friday of the month and after the final game, shower and change for a formal dinner in the Lake Room.
Terry has seen his children grow up as members of the Club, and it’s now the WETS who feel like family too. You can’t beat a summer’s evening of grass court tennis followed by drinks on the lakeside terrace.
It feels like a second home
Tennis elbow didn’t stop Simone Benmore. She discovered that there’s so much more to do at St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club.
Simone joined in 2002 to play regular tennis. But when injury struck, she took out full membership and got involved with everything else the Club has to offer.
Simone enjoys the studio classes, especially relaxation yoga and Pilates, the swimming pool and the Wednesday morning badminton sessions. She’s often at the club 5 days a week, or sometimes more when there’s a social event or dinner with friends. Simone loves the Club’s relaxing, welcoming atmosphere.
Simone has helped to set up the Table Tennis Club and with the help of her friend Anita Williams, a Friendship Group of 225 people with regular social events including talks, demonstrations and charity raffles. It’s great that visitors are welcomed to what many members consider their second home.
For the special moments
St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club is full of happy memories for Kate Fauset.
Kate grew up near the Club and first joined as a baby with her parents. She worked in the bar while a student. She also chose the Club as her wedding venue for the memorable day in 2018 when she married her husband.
Nowadays, Kate is an active gym and social member. She’s a regular at the Club events and enjoys junior ‘splash time’ in the pool with her niece and nephew.
The Club is an easy place to create special moments that will be remembered for a lifetime.
