According to a study by BMJ Paediatrics, it’s widely recognised that teenagers spend too long with screens, which can interfere with the development of their social skills and has shown to increase the likelihood of learning difficulties and obesity.
How long are they on screens for?
With Ofcom UK suggesting teens spend an average of 6.5 hours on screens per day, finding alternative activities for your teenagers this summer holiday and during term time has no doubt come to the forefront of your mind!
How can we improve this?
The British Psychological Society suggests that encouraging teens to be involved in a variety of free-time activities is key to keeping them away from their screens. Such free-time activities could include spending time with friends, taking part in a sport outside, or joining clubs where they can socialise with others of similar interests.
St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club provides a safe environment for teenagers to interact with each other, where junior members are permitted at the Club on their own, from the age of 13. The Club also offers a wide range of world-class sports facilities for teens of all ages to enjoy.
Take a look at what’s available at St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club that we’re sure will pique the interest of your teens this summer and beyond:
Tennis
At St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club, we provide expert tennis coaching, Junior competitive leagues and fun social sessions for teenagers to take part in over the summer and during term time.
Swimming
Alongside an organised programme of swimming lessons, swimming can be a great social activity for teenagers to enjoy with friends. Swimming can also help reduce stress and produce feel-good hormones that energise your spirits and make you feel good.
Gym & Studio Classes
At our indoor and outdoor gyms, Junior members from the age of 11 to 15 years of age, can access the gym from 12 noon to 6pm every day when accompanied by an adult or personal trainer (upon the completion of a gym induction). To avoid damage to growth or long-term injury, Junior members are only permitted to use the cardio machines and take part in body-weight exercise only.
Juniors under the age of 16 can attend studio classes if they are participating as a family; however, Juniors 14 years and over, are able to attend spin classes led by a qualified instructor.
Holiday Camps
There is a range of holiday camps available for 13-year-olds plus who are keen to take part in the different sport and creative sessions available.
Table Tennis
Table tennis is available for Juniors under the age of 14 on Mondays 4:30-6pm, and open to all Junior members above 14 from 8pm-10pm. All levels of players are encouraged to join the fun sessions, so don’t worry if it’s your first-time trying table tennis!
Squash
At St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club, we offer squash to junior individuals of all abilities; participation and enjoyment is key. Squash can be played competitively, or without the pressure of ranking and points, it’s your choice! Tournaments are frequently held for teenagers, with the aim of introducing Juniors to the sport, and engaging them in physical exercise.
