Finding balance can be difficult in an unbalanced world. Our lives often contain far too much of the things which wear us out (often work) and far too little of the things which refresh and renew us.
Sometimes it can feel like a high-wire act, keeping work, family, health, and fitness all in proportion. It’s easy to allow one thing to outweigh all the others.
When we create peace, and harmony, and balance in our minds, we will find it in our lives.
Louise Hay
There are four basic elements to living harmoniously: mental health, fitness, nutrition, and relationships. We must find balance in each of these areas to live a balanced life. If we allow one element to crowd out the others, we are living an unbalanced life which, over the long term, could be damaging. Ideally, we should spend our time alternating between each of the four elements, and if possible, find ways to fulfil more than one at a time.
Nutrition
Nutrition is often the forgotten element of balance. It’s all too easy to overindulge or eat foods which are not good for us. When our diet is unbalanced, it can lead to health problems and make it harder to maintain a healthy weight.
Cooking is about balance and harmony.
Nigella Lawson
We believe that nutrition is about balance between tastes, flavours, and cuisines. Since we eat with our eyes as much as our palette, food should look great too. We know what’s good for us – plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, “eat the rainbow” and so on. There’s no shortage of advice out there on eating well. But in reality, it’s not that simple, even though finding time to dedicate to cooking and eating is a source of joy.
It’s also about eating, where possible, in harmony with the seasons. There’s an innate satisfaction when we eat seasonally, as we intuitively understand that seasonal food and drink are “right”.
Relationships
Relationships are important for our mental health and wellbeing. We need to feel connected to other people, whether that’s family, friends, or a partner. Very often a sense of imbalance can be caused by lost or neglected connections with friends. When we’re feeling low, spending time with loved ones can help to raise our mood.
Some people find meeting new people difficult and draining. Others find it energising. However, there are so many ways to connect with others, there’s always a way to meet new people that’s exactly right for you.
Finding balance is about taking a step back and looking at your life as a whole. Where are you spending your time? What are your priorities? Are you giving enough attention to the things which make you happy and fulfilled? Finding harmony is about making small changes which will have a big impact on your life.
Find perfect balance with St. George’s Hill
Let’s have a look at how your club can help achieve balance in all four quarters. Because being a member of St. George’s Hill LTC is all about achieving the perfect balance of fitness, mental health, nutrition, and relationships.
Fitness
The club is of course primarily dedicated to physical fitness, and we do this in a way that’s in harmony with other elements of the balance circle. For example, our focus on friendly competition in tennis, squash and badminton means that you can find new friends and make new connections, all while burning calories and toning up.
Spending time outdoors is key to both physical and mental wellness. We’ve recently committed wholeheartedly to an outdoor lifestyle, with the new outdoor gym. We’re installing more and more equipment including climbing bars, gym tyres, free weights, exercise bikes and more. Exercising outdoors is proven to boost mood (whatever the weather) as well as physical fitness.
The kids are never forgotten as we offer kids tennis coaching as well as squash and swimming. Plus, our holiday camps are a perfect way for kids to make new friends and keep fit in the holidays. Starting young is vital to embed physical fitness and activity into your kids’ lives.
Mental wellness is something that can be improved in many ways. The spa is the go-to place for relaxation. Have you tried the many different wellness therapies offered by Germaine de Cappucini such as the Soothing Rose and Honey Harmony Stone Facial? It’s 55 minutes of pure bliss. The spa offers a fantastic range of therapies and time-out sessions for both men and women. Visit our new spa pages for more information.
Nutrition: have you dined with us lately? Take a look at our menus for a mouth-watering list of offerings, all with an eye on healthy nutrition. The chef team is dedicated to using fresh, seasonal, and local ingredients to help us eat as harmoniously with our bodies and nature as possible.
Relationships
If there’s one unexpected bonus of joining the club, it’s how easy it is to make new and lasting friendships and maintain old ones. Our whole team, from reception staff, to coaches, instructors and chefs, is dedicated to helping you relax and make friends.
The group evenings for members are one of our most popular social events. Test your mind with likeminded friends in the Bridge Club. And that’s just the start of it – don’t forget there are special events, talks, get-togethers all the year round from New Year to Christmas. There’s always an opportunity to mingle and strengthen your friendships. Take a look at our social calendar for more information.
