Fun and friendships for life
Wednesday evenings are special for Terry Watkins.
He has been a member of St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club since 1987. He originally joined to play squash but is now the heartbeat of Wednesday Evening Tennis Stars, affectionately known as the WETS.
Every Wednesday from 6 to 7.30pm the WETS get together for a friendly round of mixed doubles.
Then it’s off dressed in whites for a social drink in the Sports Bar or on the terrace if it’s warm enough, with dinner afterwards. It’s part of what makes Wednesdays so special.
“The grass tennis courts in the summer are wonderful followed by drinks by the lake in the evening.”
The WETS meet and play on the first Friday of the month and after the final game, shower and change for a formal dinner in the Lake Room.
The WETS have regular social events and go on an overseas trip once a year, sometimes accompanied by one of the Club’s tennis professionals for specialist support.
Terry has seen his children grow up as members of the club, and it’s now the WETS who feel like family too.
You can’t beat a summer’s evening of grass court tennis followed by drinks on the lakeside terrace.
